new years day featured on Reviving Charm

Happy New Year! Happy 2018!  I don’t know about you, but I have the tendency to sometimes over think things. It’s a characteristic of mine that I’ve learned to accept as both a blessing and a curse. I had been going back and forth about “just the right” post to share with you today until I had an “ah-ha moment”. I realized that my inspiration for today’s post had been staring me in the face (literally) all along. I forgot about the small piece of black and white paper I had pinned to the massive bulletin board I made to cover one wall in my office (yes, I’m crafty like that). I was adding new images to my bulletin board a few days ago when I came across an image I had previously pinned up. The casual script font simply reads “It’s going to be a beautiful year”. In that moment I realized that this uncomplicated, straightforward message summed up all that I am wishing for you and me in 2018. I have a few special things planned for the year ahead and look forward to sharing them with you. I wish you the very best for the upcoming year and hope your 2018 is filled with lots of fun, laughter, and love. Let’s have a beautiful year together!

All the best,

Yesterday officially marked the first day of winter. It was also the first time we turned on our fireplace. Now that is definitely a telling sign that the California winter has arrived because we don’t have true seasons here and our Fall really just felt like an extension of Summer. But when the mercury dips below the low 70’s you’ll start seeing people wandering around with boots, parkas, and scarves (myself included). Winter in California is like no other place and now that it is here I sure hope it can stay a while. I want to get use out of the new coat I bought this year, get use out of the new cashmere sweaters I bought myself while I should have been shopping for others, enjoy the new wool scarves I brought back as souvenirs from Italy a few months ago, and take advantage of sitting in front of the warm fireplace while sipping a hot beverage. Welcome, winter…

Nothing beats cozy and stylish this winter season.

ENTERTAINING: Set the Table Neiman Marcus Style

One of my guilty pleasures when traveling to San Francisco is visiting Neiman Marcus in Union Square. I shop the store from top to bottom and last year during the Thanksgiving holiday I fell in love with a particular tabletop store display. The table decorations incorporate old book pages, quotes, and words of wisdom that can easily be recreated. I’ve seen similar book page table runners on Pinterest but I like the idea of incorporating quotes, phrases, definitions, and words of wisdom. Choose wording to fit your particular festivity and you’ve created something really unique.

There were several mobiles hanging above the dining table displaying additional words of wisdom. If you are somewhat of a DIYer this could actually be fairly easy to make. It would be time-consuming, but easy. inspirational tabletop_Reviving Charm 16

It’s October.

We’re been back in Milan which turns out to be the last leg of our Italian journey. It’s sad to think that our long overdue two week trip is winding down. We’re not even home yet and we’re already talking about our next visit. Today is actually our last day before catching a Lufthansa flight home to California. We’ve had no real plans for today other than to spend it wandering the city taking in the sights and sounds. We’ve stumbled upon some great new shops, restaurants, and sites. I’m doing some last minute shopping and making sure I even get to enjoy a farewell gelato. When I’m back home I plan to prepare a recap post of our trip. However, please be patient for it since I’ve taken close to 5,000 pictures (so far) that I’ll need to sort through first. For today, enjoy a couple of scenes I’ve captured around Milan that celebrate the Fall season. Ciao…

I’m back…

I’m back!!!!. Our trip to La Jolla and San Diego is exactly what the doctor ordered. It’s amazing how a few short days can do wonders for the mind and psyche. Mr. B and I spent a few days at La Estancia Hotel in La Jolla, California (pictured below). Then we moved on to San Diego where we checked into a beautiful historic hotel. We frequented some favorite places, as well as discovered a few new ones. I can’t wait to share more with you in the upcoming days. Meanwhile, I am back at work daydreaming about our next vacation already….I told you wanderlust has got the best of me! By the way….How was your 4th?  I hope it was fabulous…

To rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes in the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.   –John Lubbock

Happy Friday! What do you have planned for this weekend before Valentines Day? I have been enjoying the rain these last few weeks but I will admit that I am really hoping Mother Nature provides a break tomorrow so Mr. B and I can go to the nursery to pick out a few new camellia varieties to plant in our front yard. I am also hoping to pick up my watercolors and do a little painting and finish making some reservations for an upcoming trip. R&R is always on my mind so Sunday night will be reserved for my ritual Sunday Spa Day. Other than that, let’s see what lies ahead. But for now, I will leave you with a few fun pictures from a home featuring happy colors in unexpected combinations to enjoy. Bright colors never looked so sophisticated. This is definitely a case of bright done right.! Happy weekend….xoxo.

Happy Monday! I hope you had a fabulous weekend. Mr. B and I took advantage of the long holiday weekend by hitting the road and driving a few hours from home to visit the charming towns of Montecito and Santa Barbara. We had a wonderful time but will be heading home today. I’m glad I was able to relax before my long day back at work tomorrow; I anticipate a very long, at least 15 hour day. I see at least two cups of cappuccino in my future tomorrow morning.

While many folks have today off from work, lets not lose sight of the holiday with a great quote from Martin Luther King, Jr….

Happy Friday! Happy Weekend! I adore this raspberry sofa and mix of pattern. It’s a fun and daring combination…particularly for someone like me who typically shy’s away from the bold use of color and pattern. I guess every now and then we all need to be reminded that sometimes it’s good to step outside of our comfort zone…

National Bubble Bath Day isn’t exactly an official National holiday but I will definitely stand behind something that promotes wellness and relaxation. I love, love, love taking baths. Taking 20 minutes out of my day is a wonderful way to decompress. I also find that after a long hot bath I sleep better at night. I also use it as an excuse to create a mini spa day at home to treat myself to a facial or manicure. I love to pamper myself and my skin. You should also!bath-quote-via-revivingcharm-1

Have you thought about what 2017 will mean for you? For the past several years I have picked one simple word, my word of the year, that will keep me focused in the coming months; one word that would sum up my goals for the year. In past years, my word would come to me relatively easy. This year was a little different. I had a very difficult time finding one word, a single word, that would represent 2017. I really struggled.

I knew I needed to define my direction so I assigned myself the task of coming up with a general list of things I wanted to accomplish in 2017. I am a list maker by nature so writing it down is an important step in tackling tasks big or small. Jotting something down old school style on paper or keeping track of it on my Iphone using Evernote (I love this app) is a surefire way for me to get it done! There’s personal satisfaction in being able to cross something off my “to-do” list.

Here are a few of the goals I have for the upcoming year:

  • Continue to develop my website. I’d like to transform the look of my website which means I need to enlist the help of a professional to update it for a more polished look. You may have noticed a few changes here and there that I have made over the last few months but I would really like a fresh set of eyes to help me design a new site. Naturally, if you have comments about the features on my site, good or bad, please let me know!
  • Develop my social sites. I really would like to reorganize my Pinterest pins. It’s long overdue. Plus, I think I could use Pinterest better to promote my website.
  • Travel more. 2016 was a fairly light travel year for us. I might be feeling that way only because I took 3 weeks off from work to recuperate from surgery, which took place when we would typically take our longest vacation of the year. In any regard, I think we are off to a good start since we already have two trips planned for early this year.
  • Finish designing a few rooms in our house. Since we moved into our seaside ranch home a few years ago I started redoing several rooms but none of them are really 100% complete. I need to complete the transformation of the rooms already in progress. This is actually very doable.
  • Clean out emails more often. I tend to store up emails on my personal account so it feels like a chore when it comes time to clean out my inbox. This is something I have already been working on but felt it deserved a place on the list.
  • Take a class. I’ve considered taking a baking class, art class or ??? Let’s see what 2017 has in store.
  • Read a book. I have a short attention span when it comes to reading so reading an actual book is very difficult for me. I can’t tell you the last time I read a book so If I could read just one this year I can definitely say “mission accomplished”. Do you have any recommendations?
  • Take more pictures. I want to start relying more on my camera than my IPhone to take pictures. Santa brought me a new lens for my DSLR so I’m hoping this will do the trick. I can’t give up using my phone entirely but I don’t want to always rely on it either.
  • Brush up on my Italian. Having traveled to Italy many times I took it upon myself to learn Italian. I’ve had confrontations with the girl behind the gelato counter for serving me the wrong flavor (a flavor I didn’t order and didn’t like) and a train station attendant when he tried to short change me. I usually tell people I know enough to get by but given these situations, it’s probably better than I tend to admit.  I haven’t used it a while so I’m a bit rusty.
  • Continue to take care of my skin. I have maintained a good skin care regimen and plan to keep that up. Staying hydrated is an important component of this.
  • Get fit and stay healthy. This is a very broad statement and a lofty goal but I’ve identified self-transformation as the most important thing to accomplish this year. I would imagine that many people can relate to this one.

Once I formulated a few goals for the year I realized that many of them had one thing common: TRANSFORMATION.

Having surgery this past fall was quite the wake-up call for me to get serious about getting fit and staying healthy. I have changed my diet but have been lazy about exercise. Can you relate?  I use to be a runner and bought a treadmill to be able to run at home. It’s time to dust it off and get moving. If you’re in the same situation, I’ve gathered a few inspirational quotes and beautiful home gym spaces to motivate you to be the best you can be in 2017. Let’s do this together…Why not join me? Plus, working out is a great excuse to book more massage appointments this year!
