COLOR STORY: BOLD RED STRIPES

It always feels like Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of Summer so if I had to pick a pattern that was synonymous with the season, it would have to be the classic stripe. I probably should have posted this at the start of Summer but frankly, Summer 2018 has been somewhat uninspiring for me (hence the lack of regular posts). I’m fairly certain that it has something to do with the fact that it’s my least favorite part of the year. I was going through some old pictures when I came across this image of a children’s bedroom I took a few years ago at a model home (YT- Do you remember this?). It’s definitely not my style but it was the inspiration for this post and serves as a great reminder that sometimes it’s good to step outside your comfort zone.ed stripes_Reviving Charm

When it comes to my own decorating, the color red is usually reserved for the holiday season but I really do love stripes. To mix things up a bit I thought I would put together a few examples of bold red stripes that have Reviving Charm’s seal of approval. Several of these images may not be new but are definitely still relevant…and that’s a sign of enduring style.

Red is designer Alessandra Branca’s signature color. No one does red better than she does so I thought I would end the last 2 pictures in this post with her designs.

Red, White, and Blue

Tomorrow is the 4th of July holiday and today on the blog we are celebrating the spirit of summer with designs inspired by patriotic colors. Although I’m generally partial to neutral colors, I’ve always been drawn to a classic New England look that often incorporates red, white, and blue. Mr. B and I be celebrating by the water (one of my “happy places”) and heading to La Jolla. The fact that the holiday falls in the middle of the week this year is a bit of a bummer but it’s still a good excuse to seize the day and enjoy what summer has to offer, even if only for one day. What are your holiday plans?

I wish you a very Happy 4th of July. Stay safe..stay sane…

All the best, V.

There’s nothing more classic than a good stripe so I created a series of thick stripes executed in watercolor. Most have already sold and very few are still available.

SOLD. This is another painting I created for a client in Boston. This is one in a series of four different designs but all incorporated the same brighter blue and red tones. The colors seem most appropriate for a New England interior.

STAYING NEUTRAL

Hello there! The recent silence has been unintentional but I’m back. The holidays have indeed slipped away and I am ready to rest the eyes and get back to more neutral colors after the overload of red and green during the month of December. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I’m probably not alone in my thinking.

Since I feel like I’ve had my fair share of color these last couple of months, I would like to share a few images focusing on creamy, ivory tones. It’s a “color” palette that provides a calming effect and one that also sets the stage for a look of understated elegance and subtle glamour. I also threw in a few products that might help you relax and enjoy this winter season. neutral decorating_reviving charmneutral design_Reviving Charmneutral interior design on Reviving Charmneutral design on Reviving Charmivory decor on Reviving Charmneutral decor on Reviving Charm 3classic design_Reviving Charmivory coat via Reviving Charmclassic cars_Reviving Charmclassic architecture_Reviving CharI always wear black but last year I bought a very similar pantsuit to the one shown below as a way to try something new and break out of my mold. I hate to admit that I haven’t worn it yet because I’m afraid of it becoming a dirt magnet the moment I walk out the door. Seeing it look so stylish makes me want to put my fear aside. After all, it’s a new year and new beginnings! I also have a very similar Furla tote bag in ivory leather that would work well with it. Hopefully, I can look as chic as her…ivory suit style_Reviving Charmdesigning with neutrals _Reviving Charmivory bedroom_reviving charminspirational quotes_Reviving Charmpeonies on Reviving Charmneutral style on Reviving Charm_5neutral decor on Reviving Charm_3neutral decor on Reviving CharmI just finished telling someone that finding time for yourself is the ultimate luxury. Why not find a cozy corner to sit and read a book. While you’re at it, treat yourself to a cup of Fortnum & Mason’s chamomile tea. If I can’t fit in time for a massage or facial I like to treat myself to spa days at home whenever possible. I like to treat myself and these quiet moments of relaxation are quite a luxury. I’m huge on baths and this winter I plan to try this bubble bath by Antica Farmacista. It’s described as having a “crisp scent celebrating the sparkling effervescence of Prosecco and Champagne”. Doesn’t that sound amazing? It’s currently sold out on their website but available at Nordstrom.

It has actually been a tad warm these last couple of days but I bet many people back East dealing with the insane winter weather probably can’t wait for spring to arrive. I think the orange blossom candle by Aerin Lauder is a good reminder that better weather will come and springtime is on its way. If citrus scents aren’t your thing, don’t worry…it also comes in a variety of other scents such as gardenia, tuberose, as well as a few others.

Personally, Italy is always on my mind but I will agree with the fact that Paris is always a good idea. This glass tray is perfect to hold small items and is a great reminder to plan your next trip. Green for the Money; Gold for the Honey

I’m more of a neutral kinda gal but when it comes to color, I do love the look of green and gold together. It’s seen in nature (think flowers and trees) and has been incorporated into fashion and interior design. I am not quite bold enough to incorporate this color scheme into my own wardrobe or decor, but it is a color combination that works and is one that I can appreciate. Depending on the look you are after, it can feel traditional or very modern.green and gold color schemeOn another note….let me ask you something….Have you ever heard the phrase, “Green for the Money; Gold for the Honey”? It is the title of an album (yes, an actual record album) of 70’s and 80’s soul classics that was released in 2006. I’m not a fan of that genre of music but when trying to figure out what to title this post, for some strange reason that title came to mind. Go figure…

COLOR STORY: THE BEAUTY OF BROWN

I am starting this post with a confession: I started a website in 2007 (it’s no longer active, by the way) and one of my favorite posts was what I now like to call “Color Stories”. It’s a feature highlighting a variety of things, such as fashion and design, with a particular color being the unifying element.  It was something not wildly done back then when blogging first started so it was a feature that my readers truly enjoyed. It’s a popular post format these days but frankly, Color Story posts were and are still some of those that I enjoy working on the most. It’s what I like to consider a virtual inspiration board. And I love, love, love a good inspiration board (some call them “mood boards”). I’ve posted a few Color Story features on Reviving Charm but realize that I haven’t done one in a while. Let’s take a look at the color brown…beauty-of-brown-via-reviving-charmbrown-sweater-fashion-via-reviving-charmbrown-eyes-quote-via-revivingcharmvintage-cars-via-reviving-charmbrown-restaurant-bar-interior-via-reviving-charmbrown-flower-close-up-via-revivingcharmbrow-restaurant-interior-via-reviving-charmchocolate-dessert-via-reviving-charmcooking-quotes-via-reviving-charm-blogchair-collection-via-reviving-charmbrown-hat-via-reviving-charmhades-of-brown-via-reviving-charmcolor-story-brown-via-reviving-charmmark-d-sikes-via-reviving-charm-1country-kitchen-via-reviving-charm

By the way, in case you are curious about how I came up with the color brown to focus on today then here is the back story. I recently put on an outfit that was head to toe black. (If you are curious…I wore black riding boots, black skinny jeans, a black sweater with a floppy turtleneck and a black peacoat. An oversized black Ferragamo tote bag adorned my arm). While putting together my outfit, I came across a pair of brown leather shoes I forgot I had. At that moment I realized that my wardrobe really lacks shades of brown. I might need to fix that. But the color stuck in my head and this is how today’s post came to be. Take it for what it’s worth…that’s just how my mind works…

THE ALLURE OF BURGUNDY

Burgundy is one of my longtime favorite colors to wear. It compliments my dark hair and skin tone and I will almost always fetch a compliment while wearing this color. For me, burgundy is one of those “feel good” colors. I’m sure you have one of those….a color that just makes you feel your best. It’s usually a color you start seeing around this time of the year. However, it really seems to be a color that is dominating this year in both fashion and home decor. I love when those two world collide. I couldn’t be happier to give this color the recognition it deserves. So let’s celebrate the allure of burgundy…

I have mentioned before that my favorite brand of lipstick is by Yves St. Laurent. I couldn’t publish a post without my sharing my favorite lipstick color at the moment. I am not a fan of the name (#54 prune avenue) but the color is beautiful. favorite-lipstick-of-reviving-charm-ysl-54-prune-avenue

By the way, you may have noticed that I made some subtle updates to my site. One of them includes adding a new category of topics that is called “Series: Color Stories”. I get a lot of compliments on my posts dedicated to color so I thought I would make it easier for you to find these posts in one  dedicated spot. You can still find them in the “all posts” category. And of course, if you choose to follow along (and hope you do), you will always be notified of the latest posts. Thanks for visiting Reviving Charm! Have a great weekend.

TEAL ON TUESDAY

I mentioned in this post that I have a short bob haircut. A couple of weeks ago I received a fresh-cut with additional layers in the back. This time I decided to mix things up dramatically and have the layers dyed teal. Yes, TEAL. It’s not something most people would expect of me (I actually surprised myself) and seeing their reaction has been fun. In honor of my new hair color let’s have some design fun with teal, turquoise and peacock. teal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-17about-revivingcharm_comteal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_comteal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-12teal-and-peacock-via-revivingcharm_comteal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-13teal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-5teal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-14teal-turquoise-peacock-doors-via-revivingcharm_comteal-turquoise-peacockteal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-11teal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-1teal-turquoise-peacock-via-revivingcharm_com-3

THE SUNNY SIDE OF LIFE

I’m glad it’s Friday but where did the week go?

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and find a way to stay cool. I have a busy weekend filled with home projects (installing a new light fixture), breakfast with a friend, a neighborhood party and running errands in between. I don’t have time to go to the spa but am hoping I can find time to do a facial and manicure at home. A mini spa day (or few hours) at home would be a relaxing treat.

Enjoy your weekend and enjoy all the little things life has to offer… xoxo, v.
