NEWPORT BEACH: LIDO MARINA VILLAGE

Lido Marina Village in Newport Beach, CA (the land of wealth and beautiful people) had their grand opening in Fall 2016. It’s a hop, skip, and a jump from our seaside ranch home but it wasn’t until this week that Mr. B and I finally paid a visit to one of Newport’s newest coastal shopping destinations. We had great weather with beautiful blue skies on the day we visited. It turned out to be a perfect day to stroll the area and explore the stylish mix of sophisticated shops set in a charming environment positioned right on Newport Bay. The overall design of the village is unique for California because it feels like something you’d find on the East Coast as opposed to Orange County. We all know how fond I am of the East Coast so perhaps that’s one of the reasons I enjoyed my visit so much. Lido Marina Village is home to some great shops such as Warby Parker, Serena & Lily, Le Labo, Alchemy Works, Clare V., Sugar Paper, and more. For more information and a complete list of shops and eateries, be sure to check out their website. If you plan to be in the area, be sure to check out Lido Marina Village for yourself. I know I’ll be back since I’m looking forward to the opening of Malibu Farm restaurant later this year.

Sharing is Caring: Save with The Key Rewards Program

Last week I received an email introducing a new rewards program. I’ll be honest…when I first read about it, I thought to myself, “great…another program to keep track of” since it seems like there are reward programs for so many things these days. But this new program really sets itself apart. If you are here then you share my passion for design and home decor and the new reward program called “The Key” can help you save on purchases for the home and office. By signing up, you are entitled to earn 3% back in certificate “rewards dollars” for purchases made at Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Teen, Pottery Barn Kids, William Sonoma Home, William Sonoma, Mark & Graham, and West Elm. This is actually a limited time program and here is how it works: register your email and shop at these stores (in-person or online) during the months of September and October 2017 and in November you will receive your reward certificate in November. It’s that simple! Check out the website for more details and to sign up. the key rewards program pottery barn william sonoma west elm reviving charmThis post wasn’t really intended to be a shopping guide but it’s never too early to get in the spirit of entertaining for the upcoming holiday season before the good stuff is gone. To help get a jump start on things, I thought I’d share a select number of items from some of the stores participating in The Key rewards program.

I have always loved the idea of having monogrammed dinnerware. The Poinsettia china dinner plates, salad plates, and serving platter from Mark and Graham are a wonderful way to dress up a table during the holidays. mark and graham custom monogrammed poinsettia dinner plate large platter Reviving Charm

I think the Vintage Etched Glassware collection from Williams Sonoma is so pretty and can instantly add a hint of vintage styling to your home. Mr. B and I have been talking about buying new glassware and this might do the trick.

These custom embroidered dinner napkins from Mark and Graham can actually be used all year long. I am partial to the script font but I love that a variety of other font styles are also offered.mark and graham custom emboidered linen napkins_RevivingCharm

Add a dash of color and a touch of warmth by placing a cashmere throw on the back of a sofa, chair, or to place in a guest bedroom. I’ve chosen to show red, but a variety of colors and patterns are available through William Sonoma Home. They can also be monogrammed, which would make for a lovely gift. cashmere throw william sonoma Reviving Charm

The pineapple is the universal symbol representing hospitality. The Pineapple Soap and Towel gift set is perfect for gift giving or to display in your own home.

Slice and serve your favorite cheeses with this set of 3 marble and copper cheese knives from West Elm.

To get 3% back on these, or other items, from the participating stores be sure to sign up for The Key. It’s free to join. Happy Shopping.

Shop Highlight: Studio Veneto Provides Luxury Italian Decor

Every now and then you stumble across a shop that is truly a unique find. Studio Veneto located in The Village neighborhood of La Jolla, California is one such gem. I came across Studio Veneto several years ago but it wasn’t until last summer that I had a wonderful chat with the owner, Linda McCormick, who allowed me to take pictures of the shop (Thank you, Linda!). I paid a visit to the shop again last weekend and took a few new pictures.

The exterior of the shop has an elegant quality to it with an old world Italian feel. When you walk up to the space you immediately realize that this shop is truly something special.  studio veneto fortuny reviving charm

Studio Veneto is no ordinary antique shop. It is well known for specializing in Italian antiques and textiles sourced directly from Italy. However, you don’t need to be decorating an Italian villa to shop here. Studio Veneto is a great shop visit even if you just need to find a one-of-a-kind item that will make a statement in a room. The shop is not large but there is an abundance of inventory to choose from.

studio veneto fortuny reviving charm 13

As you walk into the shop you are immediately greeted with a treasure trove of items. The photo above was from my trip last year, with the photo below from last weekend. The shop is hard to photograph as it is fairly dark with lots of tight spaces and is packed with treasures tucked away in every corner. studio veneto la jolla Reviving Charm 1

Linda is a woman after my own heart. She has quite the affinity for textiles, particularly being a longtime fan of the prestigious Italian textile maker Fortuny. She sources her textiles directly from Italy and uses them to create pillows, tissue box covers, lampshades and her signature nightlights (shown below). While $175 may sound steep for a nightlight, remember that each shade is made by hand using antique Fortuny fabric. No two are identical. These would look stunning in a powder room although I have contemplated about putting one in the living room.

Custom lampshades in a variety of shapes and sizes are a particular specialty of Studio Veneto. Tucked away in a small area at the back of the shop you can see a plethora of small shades ready to purchase off the shelf. However, if you are interested in having a custom lampshade crafted for you, there are a number of finials and other lamp parts to choose from (shown below along the right-hand side of the picture). No detail is overlooked. studio veneto fortuny reviving charm

Don’t forget to look up! Above the owner’s desk toward the back of the shop, you can see the wire lamp frames just waiting to be turned into a beautifully handcrafted lamp. The wire frames are custom made specifically for Studio Veneto. studio veneto fortuny reviving charm studio veneto fortuny reviving charm

Kalabasa Elevates Dessert into an Artform

I have never had a desire to learn to cook primarily because I think it’s too stressful. For some reason, the responsibility of prepping and timing an entire meal gives me pure and utter anxiety. However, that doesn’t automatically mean that I’ve always wanted to stay out of the kitchen because I would actually love to spend more time baking. Focusing on just one item is something I can handle and making that one thing beautiful, unique and delicious is something I would strive for.
kalabasa bakery feather brushstroke cake 5

I’ve seen and heard about the latest craze of “brushstroke cakes”, particularly those seen here from the Russian bakery, “Kalabasa”. The bakery creates chocolate “brushstrokes” by airbrushing on color to create a more artistic look. If you feel like attempting this yourself you can try using colored chocolate. It’s inexpensive but very poor quality chocolate. However, if all you care about is capturing the look and feel of the Kalabasa cake then the cheap stuff should get the job done. Just note that you won’t get the same depth of colors as the airbrush technique. With the airbrush technique, you can tell that color is layered on and blended subtly, as real painting often is. kalabasa bakery feather brushstroke case

I first learned of Kalabasa after stumbling onto their Instagram account and I would describe Kalabasa as a bakery that has elevated dessert into an artform. Their cakes are so creatively distinctive and look just too amazing to eat. I think I would feel guilty taking that first bite!

I never got into the whole cupcake craze that was going on a while back, but if I ever do need to make cupcakes then this is something I would try myself. Kalabasa via Reviving Charm 1

While the brushstroke cake has elevated Kalabasa in the baking world, we can’t overlook their other beautifully executed baked goods. Maybe they will inspire you to put your baker’s cap on. I know they have definitely inspired me. Their use of florals, sugar coating, airbrush techniques and use of gold dust are baking techniques worth testing out in my own kitchen.

Shopping on Saturday: Sale at Smythson

Call me old fashioned but the art of letter writing and days of journaling are far from over…at least in my book. And when it comes to luxury paper goods, Smythson is one of the leading purveyors of fine stationery products. Known for their quality craftsmanship, the company originated in 1887 by Frank Smythson with their flagship store on New Bond Street in London. Smythson enthusiasts include royal households, Hollywood icons, and other prominent historical figures.

If you want to treat yourself to a little luxury, why not update your stationery wardrobe or purchase some of their leather goods? Smythson is currently having a great Summer sale. At 50% off sale on a wide range of products, it’s a great time to stock up or try something new. Here’s a sampling of just a few things I picked up…

It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas. I couldn’t resist buying a few packs of these snowflake gift cards to attach to gifts. They are a steal at $10 for a pack of ten. smythson Christmas Reviving Charm

I bought this new travel journal hoping to use it for my annual fall trip this year. Naturally, I purchased it in black but it also comes in five other colors. smythson travel journal Reviving Charm 1

I always have blank correspondence cards on hand so I can compose a personal note to friends and family. “Just Because” is always a perfect occasion. In an age of technology, I hope the recipient feels extra special receiving something via snail mail. I picked up these correspondence cards in several fun, bright colors. Not all colors are on sale so be sure to check carefully.

Entertaining with Casa de Perrin

A lot goes into planning a party or event. Case in point…when newlyweds Josh and Diana started planning their wedding, they began to accumulate mismatched sets of antique silver until they had enough for their five-course wedding dinner. Before you know it, their hunt for their wedding dinnerware would evolve into a business known as Casa de Perrin, named after a set of heirloom plates inherited by Josh. The Los Angeles-based luxury tabletop curation and design brand rents and sells flatware, dinnerware, and tabletop accessories. Their website is also a feast for the eyes (pun intended) with beautiful images to inspire your next fête. I am tempted to host a party just to create a beautiful tabletop incorporating their selection of beautiful pieces. Any event featuring Casa de Perrin is one event guests are sure to enjoy.

WORLD FAMOUS NUCCIO’S NURSERIES

In Friday’s post, I mentioned wanting to buy a few new varieties of camellias for our garden this past weekend. I was keeping my fingers crossed that it wouldn’t rain because Mr. B and I planned on paying a visit to Nuccio’s Nurseries located in Altadena, California. We headed out to Nuccio’s yesterday. It was gloomy and wet but we had no rain during our visit. Mother Nature was on our side. We were off to a great start! nuccios-nursery-sign-altadena-california-via-reviving-charm

Since 1935 the Nuccio family has grown their nursery business into a one that has become somewhat of a horticultural niche specializing in camellias and azaleas known across the globe. We traveled over an hour to Nuccio’s and while we were there we encountered another couple from Montecito, California who happened to be repeat customers. That’s easily over a two-hour drive away…on a good day. And while speaking with one of the owner’s he mentioned something about an out of state customer. Even domestic goddess Martha Stewart has paid a visit.

As you walk up to the main entrance of the nursery you are greeted by a sign asking you not to start picking out flowers without the help of a salesperson. I was happy to see this because I came armed with specific questions and the help of a professional is something I already knew I would need. nuccios-nursery-altadena-california-via-reviving-charm

When we walked in, Mr. B and I made a beeline for a display table filled with a wide array of camellia cuttings. We oohed and ahhed over the beautiful flowers; most of which we had never seen before. We were greeted by one of the owners, Jim Nuccio, who was very friendly and so very helpful. We mentioned a few qualities and characteristics that we were looking for in a camellia. Base on our needs, Jim was able to immediately narrow down a few varieties for us that were located on the cutting table. The cutting table is genius as it makes the selection process so much easier with so many varieties in one central location. Jim also brought out a huge photo album full of pictures for additional options. The book is not tabbed nor does it have page numbers but Jim went straight to the pages that would be most helpful for us and highlighted a few additional plant options. He definitely knows his stuff! I was originally concerned that the process might be a bit daunting but Jim made it easy-peasy.  Thanks, Jim!

Here is the cutting table showing off the dazzling array of colorful blooms. Each flower is labeled by name. Below are some of the famous Nuccio’s Jewel variety.camellia-varieties-nuccios-altadena-via-reviving-charm-1

We decided to purchase a couple of the Ferris Wheel camellias because of their beautiful show-stopping color and pattern. ferris-wheel-camellia-by-reviving-charm-1a

camellia-varieties-nuccios-nursery-altadena-via-reviving-charmCamellias are slow growing and they tend to grow upward. There is one area in our garden that we were hoping for a smaller variety. With the assistance of Jim, we selected Bonanza that has a smaller flower and grows bushier rather than upright. We debated about purchasing it in white but we selected it in red as shown below. nuccios-nurseries-altadena-california-via-reviving-charmnuccios-nurseries-altadena-california-via-reviving-charm-1a

After we made our purchase, we wandered through the nursery and took a ton of pictures. Everywhere you turn there is something beautiful to look at. nuccios-nurseries-altadena-california-via-reviving-charm-1

I love that I was able to capture a few bees in my pictures. I have read that the bee population is declining so adding flowers to the garden is a great way to do our small part in helping them. Actually, it is something we mutually benefit from. nuccios-nurseries-altadena-california-via-reviving-charm-2

Nuccio’s Nurseries also has a cutting table for many of the azalea’s they offer up for sale.

I particularly liked the Green Glow for its unusual color and Baker’s Lavender for its feminine frilly petals. bakers-lavendar-azalea-via-reviving-charm

We didn’t come to Nuccio’s expecting to buy azaleas. However, when we saw Duc de Rohan we fell in love with its unusual salmon/pink color and decided to purchase it also.

We ended up purchasing a total of six plants so if anyone needs me this morning you can find me in the garden planting our new lovelies. camellias-and-azaleas-reviving-charm

If you are unable to visit Nuccio’s they will ship to you. However, if you are in Southern California I strongly urge you to visit Nuccio’s Nurseries for yourself. It’s tucked off a tiny road that we actually missed but once inside you will be rewarded with a beautiful selection and wonderful service. nuccios-nurseries-contact-information-via-reviving-charm

Important note: Nuccio’s only accepts cash or check. If you find yourself short on cash they will allow you to mail in a check. Yes, you read that right! This is truly a family operated business and it is refreshing to know that they operate the good ‘ol fashion way.

GLOBAL STYLE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of taking an advanced painting techniques class at Peinture Studios located in Costa Mesa, California. Peinture Studios is a boutique paint studio that sells a full range of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, offers painting workshops and provides inspiration on updating vintage furniture. I was hooked on chalk paint after taking only one class. If you have never used chalk paint, I highly recommend it. Little to no prep is needed, it is very forgiving to use and clean up is a breeze. What can be better than that? I’ve even shared a few of my projects and techniques here, here and here. But if you are located in California, I highly recommend taking a class at Peinture Studios.

The owner of Peinture Studios is Deborah Waltz and I was happy to discover pictures of her home in the current issue of Orange Coast Magazine. The design of her home was inspired by her travels to Morrocco.

SHOPPING SMALL HELPS BIG

I have been a longtime supporter of small business. It goes back long before Small Business Saturday ever became an annual event. And definitely before it ever became a “thing”. I actually prefer to shop the “mom and pops” as a great resource to find things that are unique and interesting. Whether it’s a brick and mortar location or a shop with an on-line presence only, I think it is important to support and celebrate those with an entrepreneurial spirit, don’t you? small-business-saturday-via-revivingcharm_com

Although the goal of Small Business Saturday is actually to bring attention to the independent shops in your neighborhood, don’t forget about shopping small on the internet. The crafters, makers, and curators on Etsy actually come to mind. Etsy has grown to such a large marketplace that it’s easy for a shop to get lost in the shuffle. I make shopping Etsy simple for you by highlighting a few shops that I have supported in the past or plan to support in the future.

The owner of Paper Words is a graphic designer who offers a variety of new prints illustrating a wide range of subjects including natural history, architecture, garden design, and decorative arts. This concludes my public service announcement! Happy shopping. Happy weekend.

A BALLY DESIGN DETAIL TO BORROW

They say you can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear. I take shoes very seriously. At one point I owned over 120 pairs. And yes, I’ve heard all the jokes, including the references to “Imelda Marcos”. Trust me, it gets old. Very old. Over the years I have found a few brands that have become my “go-to” because of their style and perfect fit. When I find a good pair of shoes that fit well and are comfortable I tend to be loyal to that brand. The Swiss shoemaker Bally happens to be one of my favorites for shoes and accessories. The Bally boutique I most often frequent was newly renovated with a modern design by David Chipperfield Architects. I love one particular detail of their new store design so much that I took pictures of it. And when the time ultimately comes to redesign my walk-in closet I want their design to serve as my inspiration. Take a look for yourself…

balley-shoe-store-design-via-revivingcharm_com-2

I love the look of all the symmetrical cubbies to store shoe boxes in. My version would be a much smaller scale. I would replace all my existing shoe boxes with one style to maintain the clean uncluttered look you see here. To suit my needs, I would pick a plain white box that has a clear pocket on the outside to insert a photo of what lies inside. There’s nothing worse than not knowing what you have and where to find it.

And since we are talking Bally, let me introduce you to the Bally Journal. It is a fun magazine available at their boutiques that highlight the newest collections and provide short snippet articles for easy, quick reading. They are only on issue 3 and I’m bummed that I missed the inaugural issue. Bally, if you are reading this…I would love to get a copy of Issue 1 (pretty, please).balley-magazine-via-revivingcharm_comballey-magazine-via-revivingcharm_com-2

Here are a couple of my favorite products highlighted in the current issue. The Sommet Bag comes in three sizes (small, medium, and large) as well as a variety of colors and textures.

I like several of Bally boots this season but the Chani (shown below) is such a great classic riding boot style that you can actually wear from year to year. I have a similar pair from Bally that I purchased many, many years ago. You know you made a good investment when you still get lots of use from them after many years.

balley-magazine-via-revivingcharm_com-3I can’t forget my male readers. Bally has something for you also! Even my Mr. B has his own small collection of Bally footwear.
