Sunday Spa Day Skincare Guide

In a previous post, I mentioned how my recent facial therapist commented on how good my skin was looking. She thought for sure I never wore makeup. After that particular post, one of my readers asked that I share my skincare routine. I am always happy to oblige. favorite skincare products

I do a lot of research on skincare products and try many before adding something into my regular routine. The products I use have come about through a lot of trial and error. And when it comes to skincare, what works for one person might not work for the next. However, the first important step in achieving great skin is cleansing day and night. Here are my go-to products…

skincare cleanse

  1. Clarisonic Smart Profile: This is very gentle for your face and it is amazing how much smoother your skin feels after using it. I always use it during my weekly Sunday Spa Day, and occasionally once during the week. There are a variety of attachments available making this a very versatile tool (see no. 2 below).
  2. Clarisonic Head-to-Toe Smart Brush Head Collection: The four attachments are for use with the Clarisonic Smart Profile. There is an attachment for use on the face, body, and two for the feet (a brush and a buffing disc). I especially like using it on my elbows and legs to keep skin smooth. It also does a good job of softening any rough patches on my elbows.
  3. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Cleanser: This has been my daily cleanser for quite some time. It is a gentle foaming cleanser that has a cult following. I use it daily and it never dries out my skin. It also has a nice light fragrance and a little goes a long way.
  4. Shiseido Facial Cotton: I use these in conjunction with my eye makeup remover and toner. They are very thick and soft. Unlike other cotton pads, these do not fall apart. I’ve never wanted to use anything else after switching to these. They come in a pack of 40 or 165. I buy the large pack so I don’t have to worry about running out. I even pack them with me when I travel.
  5. Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover: I’m actually surprised at how much I like several of Sephora’s products. This gets all my eye make up off easily while hydrating my skin. The affordable price is a plus.
  6. Son & Park Beauty Water: It’s a toner and cleanser all in one. I’ll be honest, with a name like Beauty Water, I was skeptical about this product at first. But I’ve been using this for several months now and I can’t live without it. I use it after washing my face and taking all eye makeup off. After using this, you’ll be surprised to see that even after you washed your face there can still be trace amounts of makeup left behind.

Doing a mask or exfoliating treatment is the most fun part of my Sunday Spa Day skin care routine. There are two basic kinds of masks: sheet masks, those that are literally a thin sheet of fiber infused with serums and/or gels; and the traditional gel, cream, and clay masks that have to be brushed directly onto the face. I’ve tried many and continue to try new products, but these are the ones I currently use and always default to. masks and exfoliants

  1. Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Peel: This is another product with a cult following and I can understand why. I use this product each morning and it softens and brightens my skin. I use the extra strength formula but if you have sensitive skin then I suggest you use the Gentle Daily Peel for Sensitive Skin.
  2. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate:  This intense exfoliating treatment is known as the “Hollywood 2-Minute Facial”.  I use this exactly as directed and it leaves my skin soft and helps even out skin tone. I once left this product on longer than recommended and ended up with what looked like burn marks on my cheeks so I wouldn’t recommend this product if you have sensitive skin. I use this once a week or once every couple of weeks depending on the condition of my skin. It does leave my skin with some redness so I only use this at night. However, I follow up with another product that takes care of that (see no. 5 below).
  3. Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask:  I love this overnight mask to deal with dry skin. After cleansing at night, I apply this and it works wonders while I sleep. If you wanted to try this before committing to a full-size product, then purchase the sample pod that provides about two uses.
  4. Eborian Precision Mask Applicator: This was the best purchase ever! If you are serious about using face masks, then this tool is a must. The silicone applicator helps to evenly apply your mask without creating a mess and wasting a lot of product. It also keeps things more hygienic by keeping your fingers out of your jars of product.
  5. Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask Extreme Detoxifying Hydrator: I usually use this following the Kate Somerville ExfoliKate to help eliminate redness. I keep this in the refrigerator to keep it nice and cool so it feels good on the skin. During the summer it is great to use on its own because the coolness feels so refreshing.
  6. Fresh Rose Face Mask. This is a gentle hydrating gel mask that I like to use regularly because it doesn’t over-hydrate my skin. It is infused with bits of rose petals and has a nice rose fragrance, so if you don’t like roses then this is not for you.

Remember, that it’s not a good idea to over-exfoliate or you will end up with micro tears on your skin. Take a cue from the condition of your skin to see what works best for you.

skin care guide for acne

No matter how well you take care of your skin, there will be times when a blemish or two will occur. Luckily, there are a few products that seem to work well for me.

  1. Kate Somerville Eradikate Acne Treatment: This is my go-to product when I need to pull the big guns out. You would think that as an adult you wouldn’t have to deal with acne but on rare occasion, I will get a stubborn blemish. In those cases, I apply a little bit of the EradiKate with a Q-tip and leave on overnight. By morning, 9 out of 10 times the blemish will be gone or hardly noticeable. I found this stuff to be very potent and can dry out my skin if overused.
  2. Clinique Acne Solutions Acne + Line Correcting Serum: I like that this is serum is gentle enough but effective, to use regularly. I use this 1 or 2 times a week at night or occasionally under makeup during the day to prevent blemishes from occurring. I like to think of it as preventative maintenance. I haven’t seen any improvement as a “line correcting” product, but it may be due to the fact that I don’t use it regularly.
  3. EradiKate Daily Cleanser: Although technically a cleanser, I am lumping this product in with the other treatment products. Like the Clinique product above, I use this for preventative maintenance and only use it a couple of times per month. It contains sulfur so it has a strange scent but I overlook that since it is an effective acne face wash.

This is what I like to call Step 1 in my beauty routine. Step 2 is layering essences and serums. Step 3 is moisturizing and Step 4 is (finally) makeup application.

I hope you enjoyed my guide to better-looking skin. Beautiful skin requires commitment and although cleansing and treating is an important part of skincare don’t forget to drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your skin.

Wellness Wednesday: An Easy Way to Create a Spa Day at Home

One of my favorite indulgences is spending time at the spa. Even when I am on vacation I try to book at least a few hours at the spa for a massage. I once booked a lengthy stay at the Four Seasons in Scottsdale with the goal of doing nothing other than lounging by the pool and frequenting the spa. That was one of my favorite vacations and I often think about doing it again. I shared a bit about that trip in a previous post about outdoor shower design. But trying to get away, even for a few hours, can be demanding on schedules. So what’s a girl (or guy) to do? Leave it to Reviving Charm to figure it out for you….I’ve got your back! Keep reading…

relax spa day Reviving Charm Spa Mistcreate a spa day at home Reviving CharmI took full advantage of the spa facilities, including the eucalyptus steam room, on previous trips to Estancia Hotel in La Jolla and most recently to Bacara Resort and Spa near Santa Barbara. Both hotel spa shops offer a product called ShowerSpa Mist. I’ll be honest, I had been tempted to purchase it on numerous occasions but was a tad reluctant. After all, how can a single take-home product compare to the expensive steam shower systems installed at resort spas? Well, after my most recent trip to Bacara I took a leap a faith and made my purchase with the intent of trying to recreate the spa experience at home. What did I learn? After using the product for almost 3 months, I learned that it’s super easy to recreate a spa-like environment that isn’t complicated, involves little to no time, and requires only one product. I also learned that I regret not buying it years ago after first learning about it.
european spa source spa mist via reviving charm 3What exactly is ShowerSpa Mist and how do you use it? Each bottle contains pure essential oil. You simply spray it onto your shower walls and let the steam do all the work. You have complete control over how much or how little scent you want depending on the number of sprays you use. I like a strong scent so I will pump 5-10 sprays onto my shower. It automatically transforms my shower into an aromatherapy experience, helps clear my sinuses, and creates a relaxing environment which is also good for the soul. ShowerSpa Mist comes in three scents: Eucalyptus, Lavender & Eucalyptus, and Lemongrass & Eucalyptus. I’ve used all three and enjoy each of them differently depending on the experience I’m trying to achieve. I prefer to use Lemongrass & Eucalyptus (my favorite) in the morning to help energize me, the Lavender & Eucalyptus is the mildest of all three and is good in the evening before bed, and the pure Eucalyptus (my second favorite) is good anytime.

I hope this post doesn’t sound sales pitchy. This is not a sponsored post and is just a product I enjoy and want to share with you. It isn’t entirely the same experience as the professional spas, but that’s something you shouldn’t expect anyway. It does, however, elevate an ordinary shower into something that is as close as you can get to recreating that experience. My showers have been transformed and now I never shower without it. If you want to try ShowerSpa Mist for yourself or give it as a gift, you can buy it at many high-end spas or get it directly from the manufacturer, European Spa Source. Happy Spa-ing….

It has been an unusually wet and cold winter in Southern California and I wasn’t sure how my skin would react to the new season. Before any issues could arise I took matters into my own hands to really mix up my skincare routine. I have been using some great products lately and my skin looks and feels great. The change in products has been a good thing since I haven’t experienced any dryness this winter (knock on wood!). A couple of weeks ago I ran into someone I haven’t seen in a few months and one of her first questions to me was, “Are you doing anything different? Because you are glowing and your skin looks radiant”. I will admit..she made my day.

During winter you start hearing a lot about skin care products to help prevent dryness and flaky skin. However, one of the most overlooked areas is your lips. You shouldn’t neglect to exfoliant and moisturize your lips to keep them kissable soft. Guys, this also includes you! And with Valentines Day coming up, now is the time to get your lips ready for any makeout sessions that may be in your future! valentines-kiss-me-quote-via-reviving-charm-1

When it comes to taking care of your lips, the goal is to keep them soft, supple and moisturized. Lip care involves little effort, which is great when you’re short on time. If you are looking for a few products to keep your lips looking and feeling their best, I’d like to share a few products with you. The best thing is that these products can help keep your pout looking and feeling great this winter…and throughout the rest of the year.

Fresh Sugar Serum Advanced Therapy. I have been a fan of Fresh products for many years but had not tried this serum until last year since it was included in a gift pack I purchased. I’m always game to try new beauty products! It is a lightweight serum housed in a pump that goes on feeling like a thin lotion to help with fine lines. Originally, I wasn’t sure how it would fit into my skincare routine so I tried using it at night and in the morning to see which I liked best. I found that I prefer using it in the morning since another Fresh product works best for me at night. I barely use just half a pump of this serum on my lips each morning after I brush my teeth. I finish my morning routine and apply my lipstick last so the serum has a chance to absorb. If I apply too much and find that my lips feel too glossy before applying lipstick then I will wipe off any excess serum before applying my color. I’m not sure if it was intended for this, but I have found that it works well as a great primer for my lipstick. Fresh says that it can be used alone throughout the day but it doesn’t provide the hydration that I need on its own. So for daytime hydration for men and women I would suggest….

Fresh Sugar Nourishing Lip Balm – Advanced Therapy. If you are carrying around Chapstick …get rid of that waxy little tube now! I absolutely love this product and is a beauty product staple that I can’t live without. I apply it at night and find that when I wake up in the morning my lips are soft and smooth. It comes in a nice small container so it’s easy to tote around if you simply want to use it as a lip treatment throughout the day. The price point is also great considering that a little goes a very, very long way.

fresh-sugar-lip-polish-review-via-revivingcharmFresh Sugar Lip Polish. This product has a cult following and I’m one of the loyal users of this particular lip scrub. I scoop out a tiny amount and rub it over my lips in a circular motion to help exfoliate and condition. I usually leave it on for about a minute (give or take) for extra conditioning. This is gritty and slightly oily so it is best to wipe it off with a damp washcloth. I like to use this once or twice a week. It’s always included in my Sunday Spa Day ritual at home. It’s exfoliating but gentle enough to use day or night. It will leave your lips feeling conditioned without leaving a heavy oily residue.

sara-happ-lip-scrub-review-via-revivingcharmThe Lip Scrub by Sara Happ. Sara Happ is touted as a purveyor of luxury lips. What’s not to love about her product that comes packaged in a cute little box tied with a satin bow? I recently started using this product and have incorporated it into my Sunday Spa Day routine. I have to admit that this product is giving the Fresh Sugar Lip Polish a run for its money. I am currently using Peppermint but it also comes in several yummy “flavors” (although not meant to be consumed) such as Sparkling Pink Grapefruit, Passion Fruit, Vanilla Bean and Sprinkles Red Velvet (yes, like the cupcakes!). It has a slightly grittier consistency and a tad oilier the Fresh version. I particularly like this for use at night before bedtime or any other time when I want to sport a nude lip. I love the Peppermint scent but I really want to try the Grapefruit version also.

So there you have it…a line up of great products to get your lips in kissable shape before Valentines Day and keep them in tip top condition. Don’t forget that staying hydrated is also essential, not only for your lips and skin but for overall good health.

Happy smooching…XOXO.
