Easy Entertaining for Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is always a great excuse to gather a few friends over. Whether you’ve been planning a fiesta for a while or are more a spur-of-the-moment kind of person, here are a few easy, last minute ideas to help you plan your party. Happy weekend! CINCO DE MAYO 2018_reviving charm

  1. I love the idea of using pink and orange roses arranged in a terracotta pot for a festive, stylish centerpiece. (image via host_to_perfection)
  2. If you are hosting a sit-down event, use fresh limes as a place cards. They are inexpensive and readily available.  A white craft pen (available at most craft stores) can be used to write the name of your guests.
  3. I’ve always liked the idea of using food containers as planters (see this post). This is an easy way to highlight the theme of your event.
  4. The guacamole at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants also includes the following ingredients:  orange juice, finely shredded orange rind and pomegranate as garnish. It’s delicious and colorful.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in my studio painting, but I’ve picked up my paint brushes again and have been working away on some new paintings. The background image seen above is actually something I painted yesterday. I will venture to guess that you’ll be seeing more of my work here on the blog.

HAPPY NEW YEAR’S DAY 2018

Happy New Year! Happy 2018!  I don’t know about you, but I have the tendency to sometimes over think things. It’s a characteristic of mine that I’ve learned to accept as both a blessing and a curse. I had been going back and forth about “just the right” post to share with you today until I had an “ah-ha moment”. I realized that my inspiration for today’s post had been staring me in the face (literally) all along. I forgot about the small piece of black and white paper I had pinned to the massive bulletin board I made to cover one wall in my office (yes, I’m crafty like that). I was adding new images to my bulletin board a few days ago when I came across an image I had previously pinned up. The casual script font simply reads “It’s going to be a beautiful year”. In that moment I realized that this uncomplicated, straightforward message summed up all that I am wishing for you and me in 2018. I have a few special things planned for the year ahead and look forward to sharing them with you. I wish you the very best for the upcoming year and hope your 2018 is filled with lots of fun, laughter, and love. Let’s have a beautiful year together!

All the best,

GOODBYE 2017, SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL LIES AHEAD…

What do you have planned this evening? This post may be full of glitz and glamour but this New Year’s Eve I will actually be spending a quiet evening alone with Mr. B in San Luis Obispo (“SLO”). After our San Diego trip last weekend we stopped home for a couple of days before heading north to the town that even Oprah has called “America’s happiest city”. And earlier this year it also ranked number 5 on National Geographic’s top 25 list of happiest cities in the U.S. I’m glad to see that several other California towns also made the list.

I do hope you are able to look back on 2017 fondly. I can honestly say that it was a good year for us. I must admit that one of the highlights of my year was planning an Italian vacation with Mr. B and actually making it back after a bit of a hiatus. By the way, I still owe you a post about our Italian adventures. I look forward to sharing that with you soon…it’s hard to condense over 5,000 pictures into a couple of posts so if there is something you are particularly interested in, please drop me a note or leave a comment on this post. I love hearing from readers.

I can’t end this post without thanking you for hanging out with me here on Reviving Charm. I appreciate you stopping by and I hope we can continue to inspire each other in the upcoming new year. I am confident that something beautiful lies ahead…

All the best…

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2017

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Greetings from San Diego! Mr. B and I will be enjoying a nice dinner for two tonight and joining my entire family tomorrow for Christmas morning. I hope your days are filled with love, laughter, and moments that create fond memories for the years to come. All the best for a very Merry Christmas.

DECORATING WITH CHRISTMAS WREATHS

How’s your holiday decorating coming along? For me, yesterday was all about decking the halls. I went to my local nursery and picked out a tree, brought it home, and decorated it.  We even finished putting up Christmas lights on the small tree by the front entrance to our seaside ranch house. Needless to say, we were quite busy yesterday.holiday wreath_reviving charm

I also purchased several fresh wreaths for both indoors and out. Every year I put a wreath on the exterior of our home at each window facing the street. This year I opted to use several 28-inch wreaths with one, the largest wreath, measuring 48 inches in diameter. I also hang a wreath indoors over the kitchen window. For me, it doesn’t feel like Christmas until my wreaths are hung with their freshly tied new bows. I could actually forgo putting up a Christmas tree but I could never give up my wreaths! No matter what your design style may be, there are a variety of ways you can incorporate wreaths into your holiday decorating so let me show you a few great examples to get your creativity flowing. christmas wreaths_Reviving Charm 3christmas wreaths in windows_Reviving Charm 1christmas wreaths on gates_reviving charmchristmas wreath on gate_Reviving Charmchristmas wreaths in windows_Reviving Charmfront door christmas wreaths_Reviving Charmchristmas wreaths_Reviving CharmChristmas Wreaths_Reviving Charm 7christmas wreaths_Reviving Charm 2christmas wreaths indoors_Reviving Charmchristmas wreaths_Reviving Charm 1christmas wreaths_Reviving Charm 5wreath in kitchen_reviving charm blogchristmas wreaths on furntiture_reviving charmchristmas wreaths_Reviving Charm 6Christmas wreaths _Reviving Charm 2christmas wreaths in the kitchen_reviving charmwreaths on furniture_Reviving Charmwreaths on bookcases_Reviving Charmindoor christmas wreaths_Reviving Charmwreaths on mirrors_Reviving Charm 1wreaths on mirrors_Reviving Charmdining room christmas wreath_Reviving Charmwreaths on chairs_Reviving Charm 3wreaths on chairs_Reviving Charm 2wreaths on chairs_reviving charm 4wreaths on chairs_reviving charm

Happy Easter. Viva Spring. Viva Sweet Love

Sweet spring is your time

and viva sweet love.   –E.E. Cummings

Several weeks ago I had a fleeting thought about hosting an Easter brunch for the family. I procrastinated and never got around to actually planning anything. Shame on me. I guess I can try for next year! Instead, the Mr. and I will be having an Easter BBQ at home for just the two of us. I also plan to spend the morning out in the backyard garden to tidy up the containers just a bit. This morning I spent quite some time outdoors taking inventory of what needs to be done. Nature’s lovely creatures were out in full force. I really enjoyed seeing all the hummingbirds, lizards, butterflies and squirrels in action. I can’t say the same for a couple of spiders I encountered. EEK!!!!! Couple all the “activity” in the garden with the sight of beautiful new blooms and I was reminded me that spring is definitely here!

Viva Spring. Viva sweet love. Happy Easter!  xoxo- V.

BUON SAN VALENTINO

Buon San Valentino! Can you tell I have been working on my Italian?!!

Happy Valentines Day…What does the day hold for you? Valentine’s Day has never been a big deal for me. In fact, Mr. B and I usually never go out on Valentines Day. However, for a split moment, I thought about making a dinner reservation at a local restaurant. When I realized that it was going to cost us at least $200 for a meal (not including alcohol) at a local restaurant I said, “forget it”. I’m far from frugal and will pay for great food but that same meal for two would normalIy cost about half that amount and on any other day we won’t have to deal with the crowds. We typically celebrate with a nice romantic dinner for two at home. This year is no exception. I won’t be cooking…that’s Mr. B’s job. But this year he’s getting the night off since we arranged to pick up some fabulous take out. We’re keeping it simple and I really couldn’t be happier.

I hope your day is filled with lots of happiness, sexy smiles, love and, of course, kisses. This can be a tough day for those without a significant other so how about thinking of a way to make it extra special for them today. After all, showing a bit of kindness never goes out of style.

By the way, isn’t this the most charming picture? I sure hope they took the advice I gave in this post!  XOXO.

HAPPY MLK DAY

Happy Monday! I hope you had a fabulous weekend. Mr. B and I took advantage of the long holiday weekend by hitting the road and driving a few hours from home to visit the charming towns of Montecito and Santa Barbara. We had a wonderful time but will be heading home today. I’m glad I was able to relax before my long day back at work tomorrow; I anticipate a very long, at least 15 hour day. I see at least two cups of cappuccino in my future tomorrow morning.

While many folks have today off from work, lets not lose sight of the holiday with a great quote from Martin Luther King, Jr….

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

If you have followed me for a while then you already know that Mr. B and I are usually away on vacation during this time of year. Our anniversary and my birthday are a week apart so we use these special events as a great excuse to pack our bags and get away. Last year we spent our time in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. Part of our stay included time on Cape Cod where we stayed at a lovely inn. You can read about the inn here. I am just realizing that we have taken a few trips since then and never got around to posting about them. Which begs the question..when is it too late to post something?

Unfortunately, with my recent surgery we made no real plans for either occasion since we had no idea what kind of shape I would be in post surgery. I will admit that this really kicked my butt and I thought my recovery would come along much quicker. I’m still recuperating so we are staying close to home to enjoy a nice quiet dinner at a local restaurant. If I am up to it, I might spend a part of the day to do some online shopping and buy myself some birthday gifts. I think deserve it!

To celebrate my birthday let’s enjoy some cake and ice cream today! happy-birthday-to-reviving-charm-2016

RED WHITE AND BLUE VIA REVIVING CHARM 1

Random tidbit about me: The red and blue brushstroke pattern in the collage above is from an original watercolor I painted. It was part of a series of red and blue watercolors, a few of which made their way to a new home in Boston, Massachusetts.
