Spring Has Arrived

Today officially marks the first day of Spring. Happy Spring! I have been eagerly awaiting Spring because one of my main goals this season is to tackle the design of our small backyard garden. Mr. B and I opted to tackle the project ourselves (what are we getting ourselves into?) by planting a new row of privet to create a nice tall hedge and star jasmine as a pathway border. A simple, low maintenance green and white garden is what I’m going after. I am also looking to accentuate this area with a new garden bench. Do you have any great resources for garden furniture and accessories?

In the meantime, I am loving the New Orleans garden of the aunt of Jane Scott Hodges who is the owner of Leontine Linens. More of the garden can be seen here on Bettie Bearden Pardee’s website, Private Newport.

I am also looking forward to all the beautiful flowers that will be in bloom this season. I was hoping to plant more in the garden for the purpose of having my own cutting garden but, frankly, it seems like too much of a commitment. Instead, my goal is to visit the farmer’s market more often to pick up more fresh flowers. The arrangement below is stunning, isn’t it?

What are your goals this season?

Kindness Is Always in Style

Yesterday was Administrative Professionals Day. Did you do anything for your staff or were you treated to something special? As a way of saying “thank you” for all my staff’s hard work and helping make my job a little bit easier there were several treats arranged for them throughout the day. One of them included a delivery of beautiful flowers. My regular florist couldn’t deliver to the office as early in the morning as I had hoped and I did not want them delivered a day before. I opted to reschedule some dinner plans in order to pick up the flowers myself the night before. I’ve used my florist for many years and when they heard of my dilemma, they offered to make a special arrangement for me to stop by after normal business hours to pick up the floral arrangements myself. It was a wonderful gesture, an act of kindness, and fabulous customer service….which reminded me of the many reasons I continue to be a loyal customer. When I got home I carefully unloaded the flowers only to have to reload them in the morning. I also got up extra early yesterday morning to allow time to pick up some breakfast treats and get into the office before anyone else. I wanted to make sure each arrangement was placed perfectly on the recipients desk so they had a pretty surprise to look at first thing when they walked into the office. What they didn’t know about was all the behind the scenes activity that took place to make it all happen. Hopefully, I made it look effortless.

When I loaded the flowers into my car I couldn’t help but notice that they matched the red leather interior perfectly!

To put it simple: “Treat others as you would want to be treated”.  Words to live by. If you search the internet you can find countless quotes about kindness. Here are just a few that I wanted to highlight for you today.

Kindness is more than deeds, it is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is anything that lifts another person.  –Plato

The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.  –Kahlil Gibran

Kindness. One of the greatest gifts you can bestow upon another. If someone is in need, lend them a helping hand. Do not wait for a thank you. True kindness lies within the act of giving without the expectation of something in return.

Kindness is behaving in a way that makes people feel good when they are around you.

I couldn’t end this post without specifically mentioning my florist, White House Flowers. I couldn’t have pulled this off without their assistance. The owner, Mary, and her assistant Fernando always take great care of me and always remember my preferences.

If you are in need of a florist in Southern California, then definitely give them a try.  They really care about their customers, provide the freshest flowers and offer great customer service. Don’t forget to tell them that Vanessa sent you!

Happy Easter. Viva Spring. Viva Sweet Love

Sweet spring is your time
is my time
is our time for springtime
and viva sweet love.   –E.E. Cummings

Several weeks ago I had a fleeting thought about hosting an Easter brunch for the family. I procrastinated and never got around to actually planning anything. Shame on me. I guess I can try for next year! Instead, the Mr. and I will be having an Easter BBQ at home for just the two of us. I also plan to spend the morning out in the backyard garden to tidy up the containers just a bit. This morning I spent quite some time outdoors taking inventory of what needs to be done. Nature’s lovely creatures were out in full force. I really enjoyed seeing all the hummingbirds, lizards, butterflies and squirrels in action. I can’t say the same for a couple of spiders I encountered. EEK!!!!! Couple all the “activity” in the garden with the sight of beautiful new blooms and I was reminded me that spring is definitely here!

Viva Spring. Viva sweet love. Happy Easter!  xoxo- V.

Setting the Table: Easter Inspiration

This season I’ve noticed that I’ve become more and more partial to the color lavender than I ever have in the past. It is usually a color that I normally don’t gravitate toward. However, I really like this Easter table setting as seen in Victoria Magazine. The combination of lavender and green seems perfect for a springtime holiday celebration.easter entertainingeaster inspiration via reviving charm 4easter inspiration via reviving charm 2

If you don’t have the details of your Easter table ironed out yet, I’ve made it easy for you to recreate the look you see above. Just a few key pieces are all you need to recreate a similar table setting.

  • China: There are two china patterns used for this table setting and each is by Anna Weatherley. Antique Vegetable is a discontinued pattern but Springtime in Budapest, above, is a current pattern and available here. The pattern is pricey but each piece is delicately hand painted in Hungary. Consider them heirloom pieces.
  • Lavender German crystal glass goblets available here.
  • Linen hemstitch napkins available here.
  • Beaded flatware available here.

If you already have your tablescape all taken care of, I would love to hear about what you have planned…

ADVENTURES IN GARDENING

I have always loved and appreciated beautiful lush gardens but it wasn’t until Mr. B and I moved into our seaside ranch home that I became interested in our own landscaping. This is primarily due to the fact that we bought a fixer and the gardens left little to be desired. At some point we will rework the outdoor spaces. But for now everything is kept neat and tidy since we are currently focusing on the interiors of our home. When the time comes to reevaluate our outdoor spaces I would love to work with someone like Molly Wood. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy the garden as it is, particularly the when the roses and spring flowers are in bloom. I love when I can cut flowers from the garden and bring them indoors. Simple pleasures.

Flowers from our garden waiting to be arranged – Spring 2016

Even though the garden isn’t quite where I want it to be I have enjoyed trying out new plants and flowers in various areas of our property to see how well they respond.  Since I am a planner by nature and have a great affinity for stationary supplies, I am not surprised at the fact that I wanted to purchase a gardening journal to document events in our garden. I recently purchased this journal from Color Box Design & Letterpress. I can’t wait to put it to good use.

My new garden journal from Colorbox Design & Letterpress.

It has a sweet letterpress design on the cover and is wire bound with 60 blank pages leaving me to decide exactly how I want to put it to use. I am planning to document planting instructions, including what has been planted and where. I plan to incorporate pictures so I can see progress (growth) through pictures and note at what time of year specific plants and flowers were planted and how long they lasted throughout the season. I know it’s winter and but it is never too early to start planning for Spring. Note to self: need to order spring bulbs soon.

Flowers in our garden – Spring 2016

A gardening journal accompanied by a nice pen or pencil (my mechanical pencil shown above is from A.G Spalding & Bros.) would make a great housewarming gift or the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. Heck, they are so affordable why not treat yourself to one also. In addition to Adventures in Gardening, Color Box Design & Letterpress has a few other designs that would make perfect gifts including Adventures in Parenting, Adventures of the World and Adventures in the Kitchen. Journals can be purchased here.

UNEXPECTED SIGNS OF SPRING

Last week I got in my car and realized that a grasshopper was sitting on the front windshield. Not wanting to disturb it, I backed out of the driveway thinking he (or she) would jump off and find a new resting place. Much to my surprise I drove several miles with the grasshopper clinging to the glass for dear life. It was quite comical to see his (or her) little antennas blowing in the wind.  I reached my destination with the grasshopper still hanging on.  I got out of my car and shooed it away. I went shopping for about an hour and when I came back I realized that it returned. However, this time it was resting on the back windshield. I shooed it away again but it moved to its original resting spot: the front windshield.  I shooed it away again. This time I got in my car and hightailed it out of the parking lot like a mad woman before it had a chance to hitch a ride back home.

Needless to say, a day after my chance meeting with the grasshopper I came across these beautiful tabletop images. Coincidence? I think not!  –XOXO, V.

CELEBRATING SPRING WITH FLORA FORAGER

Let’s Celebrate Spring!

Oh….the power of social media. I found Flora Forager while browsing Instagram. The owner of Flora Forager, Bridget Beth Collins, is a botanical artist who turns wildflowers into art. Literally. Given that today is the first day of Spring, I thought it would be a wonderful reason to showcase Bridget’s whimsical floral creations. If your interested in purchasing one of her photographs they are are available on her website.

I love to adventure into the wildflower woodlands, mossy waterfalls, and grey sand starry expanses of the Pacific Northwest. I forage almost all of my creations from foliage and flowers plucked from our sidewalks, meadows, and woods in our neighborhood. I have a small garden in the city, and my mother has a big rambling secret garden filled with old english roses in the sea town of Edmonds where I grew up.  –Bridget Beth Collins
